WHAT IS THE 'GOOD CITIZEN DOG SCHEME'?
The Kennel Club Good Citizen Dog Scheme is the largest accredited dog training programme in the UK. Now a well-established dog training programme that has been in operation since 1992. The Scheme is open to all dogs, young or old, pedigree or Crossbreed, whether Kennel Club registered or not. It provides a quality standard of training for dogs and owners, and incorporates many domestic obedience exercises, Dog owners of any fitness level or disability can take part too. The Scheme is non-competitive and emphasis is placed on the standard of achievement. There are four levels of courses from Puppy Foundation, to Bronze, Silver, and Gold Award
BRONZE LEVEL AND STANDARD REQUIREMENTS
The Bronze level GCDS is our most popular course for older puppies and adolescent dogs. It is aimed at dogs 20 weeks and older (there is no upper age limit.) This class is designed to be a follow on from puppy training classes and is a natural progression for those owners that want to build on their dogs obedience training and develop a positive and trusting the relationship with their dog. In our experience, dogs that have previously attended a formal puppy training class such as our KC Puppy Foundation class (or other similar class) are better equipped to deal with this more advanced training. For the Bronze Level Test, (optional) dogs are not required to have completed the Puppy Foundation Assessment programme.
If you have not been to any formal puppy training classes with your dog, please speak to us to discuss if this course would be right for you and your dog before you book. We may recommend either coming to our puppy foundation class or having some 1:1 training sessions to get you up to the required level. Please contact us if you are unsure.
NERVOUS / AGGRESSIVE DOGS
We are happy to enrol nervous or anxious dogs onto this class who have a basic level of training.
We will do our best to support anxious dogs to help them feel comfortable and relaxed in our classes.
Any uncontrolled, mouthing, barking, growling or other threatening behaviour is not permitted and we may suggest that 1:1 training sessions will be required either instead of this class or before the dog can take part in the bronze class.
A BIT ABOUT THE BRONZE COURSE
Reinforcing core skills is a key component of the course. At this age dogs can concentrate and learn better in a calm and supportive atmosphere, Sessions are typically run with a mix of indoor and outdoor sessions to allow your dog to learn new functional skills in different environments. We offer you your own sectioned space in our hall (when we are indoors) and use training aids to help with learning new training skills. We keep it fun and enjoyable and continue with basic training, yet also introduce new commands and clicker training for those that want to try, so the dogs learn about positive rewards for good behaviour. So, what will your dog learn?
- Impulse control (learning to wait for good things to happen)
- Building great focus with eye contact
- Walking politely on a lead
- House manners and meet and greet skills
- General obedience
- Stay (in one spot)
- Wait at a door / gate
- Recall in our 5 acre outdoor facility
- Force-free positive training methods only
- Encourages your dog to make good choices
- Fun, sociable and much more!
The Kennel Club Good Citizen Silver and Gold classes are a follow on for anyone that passes the Kennel Club Bronze Award.. We are firm supporters of building upon the skills learnt through the Bronze Scheme, so both dogs and owners it then becomes a natural and fun progression to learning new training skills and concepts. This is so important in training for many life challenges that our canines find themselves in. At Worcester Dogs we are proud to offer you the opportunity to learn with us in a way that you and your dog will enjoy!
